1920's Cottage Home, Lynchburg, Virginia

In the early 1920’s Lynchburg was the third wealthiest city, per capita, in the country. The streetcar system had extended down Peakland Place, the Oakwood Country Club had recently opened and homes that exuded craftsmanship were the signature of young Rivermont.

The Preserve at Oakwood is borrowing on that 1920’s theme. CS Custom Structure’s is the exclusive architect for phase ll and wanted to set the standard for homes within the Preserve.

Our architects and builders met on several occasions to create a new symbolic Rivermont cottage that would blend with the old while exceeding the energy efficiency and craftsmanship found in most new homes.

Our house located on Trolley Court within the Preserve at Oakwood contains much of the craftsmanship and details one would expect in an authentic 1920’s Rivermont home. Exterior details include terra-cotta chimney pots, a decorative chimney stabilizer bar, operable shutters, stained wood headers, slate roofing, punched brick gable vents, a pergola, an exterior studio stair, a detached garage with carriage doors, a covered connector with Doric columns, a courtyard with perimeter sitting wall, and wrought iron railings to name a few.

Interior detailing centers on a 1920’s theme highlighted with black and white marble and subway tile, painted bead-board, hardwood floors and numerous built-in pieces that closely replicate furniture. There are three fireplaces within the home and considerably more square footage than one would expect from the quaint cottage exterior.

The house consists of a Foyer, Library, Dining area, Gathering room, Kitchen, Laundry room, Powder room, and large Master Suite on the first floor. Three additional bedrooms are upstairs along with a sitting area and two additional baths.

The total square footage of the home and garage is slightly over 5,800 square feet with the living area being approximately 3,020 sf. Additional square footage includes over 1700 sf of expansion space in the unfinished basement, approximately 750 sf in the garage and shop and another 450 square feet in the unfinished studio above the garage.

In addition to our architectural and construction personnel, we also requested the expert Interior Design services of Interiors by Moyanne in the review and selection of interior finishes.

Southern Landscaping also teamed with CSI and Moyanne. Their role is to select and install mature plantings that would have been popular in the 1920’s. We and Southern Landscape have been on the search for 40 year old plantings. Our goal is the make this home appear as if it has graced its site for decades. To further enhance this 1920’s theme, we will deliberately power wash drip lines that will remove portions of white-wash from the brick. This removal of mortar, exposing the brick, will help in making this new Rivermont cottage appear as if it was constructed over 90 years ago when craftsmanship took precedence.

The Realtor of Choice was The Flint Property Group. They were selected based on their professionalism, their commitment to the Preserve and to their sincere obligation to their clients.
